Where 6 mm is the right answer
Wrist compositions, high-count strands intended to be carried rather than displayed, and component supply to jewellery producers who need matched beads by the kilogram rather than the strand. It is also the diameter that makes a 99-bead composition wearable, which matters more in some markets than the presence a larger bead brings.
It is the honest answer to a keen price target too. A 6 mm bead carries roughly an eighth of the material of a 12 mm bead, and amber is traded by weight — so where a programme has a hard price ceiling, dropping diameter preserves every quality decision, while dropping polish stages does not.
What gets harder at this size
Drilling concentricity. At 6 mm the bore is a larger proportion of the bead, and a hole that runs even slightly off-centre shows immediately as a strand that will not sit straight. This is where cheap 6 mm production gives itself away, and it is why our drilling concentricity check is one of the nine gates rather than an assumption.
Cord selection also changes. A cord sized for 10 mm beads will look coarse threading 6 mm ones and will not pass cleanly; we step the cord down and re-test the termination rather than reusing the specification.
