Amber Components for Jewellers

Not everyone buying from us wants a finished strand. Jewellery producers want matched loose beads by the kilogram, drilled to their own specification, and they are the most technically demanding customers we have.

What a component buyer actually needs stated

Bore diameter, bore orientation, dimensional tolerance and colour matching standard — four numbers that most suppliers leave vague and that determine whether the beads work in a setting. We state all four on the quotation rather than after the first rejection.

Half-drilled beads for pin settings, side-drilled beads and non-standard bores are all normal orders. So is a tolerance tighter than our standard, quoted honestly as a higher price rather than promised at the same one.

Where amber is the wrong material

Amber is 2.0–2.5 on the Mohs scale, softer than almost anything else in a jeweller’s case. In a ring that is worn daily it will scuff, and no finish prevents that. We will say so before an order rather than after a customer complaint.

In earrings, pendants, prayer-bead work and pieces that are not in constant contact with hard surfaces, it behaves beautifully and its low density is an advantage rather than a compromise.

Questions

What buyers ask about this

Yes — bore diameter and orientation to your drawing, including half-drilled and side-drilled.

± 0.05 mm is achievable and quoted as such. We state the tolerance per order rather than leaving it vague.

Rarely. At 2.0–2.5 Mohs it scuffs in daily wear and no finish prevents it. We will tell you before the order.
