Transparent Amber is the reference against which every other variety in the house is measured. Each blank is inspected under directional light before cutting; any bead with clouding, fracture lines or asymmetric inclusion is returned to stock.

The polish is taken through nine progressive stages, finishing on a felt wheel with a proprietary compound. The result is a surface that refracts rather than merely reflects — a depth that photographs beautifully and, more importantly, feels correct in the hand.

This is the variety most requested for government gifting, executive presentation sets and flagship retail. It is unforgiving of imperfection, which is precisely why it signals quality without a word of explanation.

Transparent Amber

What the grade actually costs

Clarity is not a process decision, it is a sourcing one. Flawless stock is a minority of any parcel that arrives, and building a matched strand at this grade means returning most of what was inspected back to general stock. That rejection is the entire price difference between this variety and honey, and it is worth understanding rather than negotiating.

It also caps volume in a way the other varieties do not. A buyer asking for ten thousand matched transparent strands is asking for something a season’s material supply may not contain, and we would rather say so at quotation than discover it at month three. Where a programme needs that scale, pressed amber reaches the same visual position with none of the constraint.

Where it earns its position

Government gifting, executive presentation and flagship retail — anywhere the object is examined closely by someone who was not asked to be impressed. Transparent amber survives that inspection because there is nowhere for a shortcut to hide: clouding, fracture lines and asymmetric inclusion are all visible before anything else about the piece registers.

That is also the argument for it as a sample. When we send a set to a buyer who has not handled our work, this variety goes in regardless of what they asked for, because it settles the question of process discipline faster than a conversation.

Specifying it well

Go up in diameter. Clarity only reads where light has enough body to travel, so a 6 mm transparent bead throws away most of what it cost — from 10 mm the interior starts to work and at 14 mm it is the entire point of the object. Below 8 mm we would suggest honey and spend the difference elsewhere.

Pair it with restrained furniture. Cast silver or plain amber terminations let the material carry the piece; heavy gold competes with it and usually loses. The exception is protocol gifting, where the furniture is carrying an institution rather than a taste.

How to inspect a strand before you accept it

Hold it to a directional light and look along the bead rather than at it. Clouding shows as a soft interruption in the light path, fracture lines as a hard one, and both are visible at arm’s length once you know to look. Then let the strand hang and turn it slowly: a bead that is fractionally oval breaks the line of highlight running down the run, and on this grade that break is unmissable.

Finally, run it through the hand. Bead-to-bead consistency is felt before it is seen, and a strand that steps unevenly under the thumb has a dimensional problem no photograph would have shown you. Those three checks take under a minute and they are what we do at the last gate before packing.

Questions about transparent amber

Because clarity is scarce in the raw parcel and most of what is inspected is returned to stock. The rejection rate is the price difference.

Up to a point, and we quote the ceiling honestly rather than accept an order we cannot hold. For genuine scale, pressed amber reaches the same visual position without the constraint.

10 mm and above. Below 8 mm the clarity has no body to read through and the premium is wasted.

Cast silver or plain amber terminations. Heavy gold competes with the material rather than framing it.
