Choosing Bead Diameter: The Decision That Sets Your Cost

Buyers spend most of a specification call on colour and finish. The variable that actually determines the quotation is the one they mention last.

Why diameter dominates cost

Amber is traded by weight. The volume of a sphere scales with the cube of its radius, so a 12 mm bead carries roughly 3.4 times the material of an 8 mm bead. Across a 99-bead strand that difference is the entire commercial position of the product.

This is why a quotation that is not tied to a diameter band is meaningless. Any supplier quoting a per-piece price without specifying diameter is either inexperienced or planning to substitute.

What each band is for

4–6 mm suits fine strands, wrist compositions and component supply to jewellery producers. 6–8 mm is everyday retail and comfortable on a full 99-bead composition. 8–10 mm is the house standard — the band that reads as substantial without becoming a statement.

10–12 mm is the volume diameter across the GCC and the safest choice for a first Gulf programme. 12–14 mm belongs to gifting, collector and Luxury Series tiers, where presence is the point and material cost is not the constraint.

Shelf presence versus hand feel

A larger bead photographs better and holds a display case more convincingly. A smaller bead is more comfortable through a long dhikr cycle and moves faster in daily-use retail.

If a range must choose one, we generally recommend building the core at 10–12 mm and offering 12–14 mm as the gifting tier rather than the reverse. Upselling to presence is easier than explaining why the everyday piece is unwieldy.

Bead count changes the arithmetic

A 33-bead strand at 12–14 mm may weigh less than a 99-bead strand at 8–10 mm. Specification decisions should be made on total weight, not on the diameter figure in isolation.

For a tiered range, holding diameter constant and varying bead count keeps the visual identity consistent while spreading the price ladder — often a cleaner solution than changing bead size between tiers.
